OPUNTIA FICUS - INDICA
Prickly Pear Cactus, Tunas, Nopales, Barbary Fig

The Opuntia cactus is a domesticated cactus used primarily for agricultural purposes.   It plays an important role in Mexican agricultural production and is thought to be native to Mexico.  It produces edible fruit (prickly pear)  and spatulates (nopales).   The fruit can range from green to red while the flowers bloom in colours of red, white and yellow. This shrub can grow up to 5m in height.

This semiarid cactus likes dry climates, and plenty of sunlight.   Water your cactus only once the soil is dry, about every 2 weeks. Place your cactus in an area that receives direct-indirect bright light.

Use well-draining cactus soil for potting.  The opuntia is a  relatively fast growing cactus and should be repotted about every 2 years.

Non toxic to pets and humans.
