November Plant of the Month: Anthurium Clarinervium/ Anturio Tortuga

Inspired by the turtle nesting activities on our local beaches, November’s plant of the month is the Anthurium Clarinervium, locally known as ‘tortuga’.  

Originally from Mexico, Anthurium Clarinervium are highly collectible and make a dramatic statement with large, turtle shell patterned leaves.  The thick, dark green leaves can reach 30cm+ and have a velvet texture. The plant can reach a height of 80cm+.  This epiphytic variety of anthurium is prized for the foliage, not for the ‘flower’ (spathe) which is relatively unassuming.  Clarinerviums are guaranteed to get noticed by guests and make a beautiful centerpiece.

Anthurium Clarinervium love the humid conditions we are experiencing at this time of year and are relatively easy to grow as a houseplant or on patios.   They enjoy a humid location with medium to bright indirect light.  They do not tolerate direct, bright sun well.  We allow the soil to just barely dry out on top before watering, keeping the soil a little moist.  Fertilize very lightly once every 1-3 months when the plant is actively growing.

Inspirada en las actividades de anidación de tortugas en nuestras playas locales, la planta del mes de noviembre es el Anthurium Clarinervium, conocido localmente como "tortuga".

Originarios de México, los Anthurium Clarinervium son altamente coleccionables y hacen una declaración dramática con grandes hojas estampadas de caparazón de tortuga. Las hojas gruesas de color verde oscuro pueden alcanzar más de 30 cm y tener una textura aterciopelada. La planta puede alcanzar una altura de 80 cm +. Esta variedad epífita de anturio es apreciada por el follaje, no por la "flor" (espata) que es relativamente sencilla. Los clarinervium están garantizados para ser notados por los invitados y hacer una hermosa pieza central.

A Anthurium Clarinervium le encantan las condiciones húmedas que estamos experimentando en esta época del año y son relativamente fáciles de cultivar como planta de interior o en patios. Disfrutan de una ubicación húmeda con luz indirecta media a brillante. No toleran bien el sol directo y brillante. Permitimos que la tierra apenas se seque por encima antes de regar, manteniendo la tierra un poco húmeda. Fertilice muy ligeramente una vez cada 1-3 meses cuando la planta esté creciendo activamente.
