Plant Move

Our crazy adventure of moving our large collection of plants from one home to another!

Have you ever wondered what it's like to move an entire plant shop? We experienced this twice in the past 6 months. The first move was when we closed the shop back in March and moved an entire plant shop into our 2 bedroom apartment and then AGAIN this past week, after selling our place, and finding a rental that has really really great light and space! Even though I'm glad we changed homes, this is not something I wish to do again for a very long time. It is a lot of work! Moving plants is not like moving books or furniture. If you packed them up ahead of time, you risk putting their health in jeopardy. Medium to large plants are heavy and can't be packed in large numbers in a single box. Plants have dirt. Plants must be handled with care. Plants have crazy leaves and stems sticking out everywhere that need protecting. And so on and so on.... Plants are complex things to move, especially when you have close to a 1000 plants and have limited time to move them all.

Above is a photo I took before we moved recently. This is only one section of the old house where we had plants growing.

Luckily for us, our new place was closeby, which meant the plants would not have to travel too far. We gathered as many bins and boxes as possible and packed them up with our plants. Over the course of 3 days, we brought boxes of plants over to the new place, unpacked them and returned the boxes to the old place to get more plants. Here's a photo of what this madness looked like! Those windows totally make up for it!

Even though it looks insane, we managed to get our plant space organized quite quickly. Our home is now a mixture of our own private plant collection, plants for the shop, art, knick knacks, antique furniture, pottery, rugs. All of these things bring this space to life.

planta entera a nuestro apartamento de 2 habitaciones y luego OTRA VEZ la semana pasada, después de vender nuestro lugar y encontrar un alquiler que tiene realmente una gran luz y espacio. Aunque me alegro de que hayamos cambiado de casa, esto no es algo que desee volver a hacer durante mucho tiempo. ¡Es mucho trabajo! Mover plantas no es como mover libros o muebles. Si los empacó antes de tiempo, corre el riesgo de poner en peligro su salud. Las plantas de tamaño mediano a grande son pesadas y no se pueden empaquetar en grandes cantidades en una sola caja. Las plantas tienen suciedad. Las plantas deben manipularse con cuidado. Las plantas tienen hojas locas y tallos que sobresalen por todas partes y necesitan protección. Y así sucesivamente ... Las plantas son cosas complejas de mover, especialmente cuando tienes cerca de 1000 plantas y tienes un tiempo limitado para moverlas todas.

Afortunadamente para nosotros, nuestro nuevo lugar estaba cerca, lo que significaba que las plantas no tendrían que viajar demasiado lejos. Reunimos tantos contenedores y cajas como pudimos y los empaquetamos con nuestras plantas. En el transcurso de 3 días, llevamos cajas de plantas al nuevo lugar, las desempaquetamos y devolvimos las cajas al lugar anterior para obtener más plantas. ¡Aquí hay una foto de cómo era esta locura! ¡Esas ventanas lo compensan totalmente!

Aunque parece una locura, logramos organizar el espacio de nuestra planta con bastante rapidez. Nuestra casa es ahora una mezcla de nuestra propia colección de plantas privadas, plantas para la tienda, arte, chucherías, muebles antiguos, cerámica, alfombras. Todas estas cosas dan vida a este espacio.

¡Incluso los perros se sienten como en casa en su nueva jungla interior!

¡Lo mejor de todo es que nuestras plantas están felices y bien!
